"Experience of Ward E17 Childrens Renal Ward"

About: Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust - Queen's Medical Centre Campus

Our grandaughter was urgently transferred to ward E17 from a hospital 50 miles away at the end of March this year - we came from a brand new hospital and when we arrived we couldnt believe how old and huge this hospital seemed also it appeared quite rundown, but as soon as she arrived got on to the ward and then 20 mins later we arrived the family expressed how relieved we were to be there. From the very minute of entering that hospital that awful night she was totally cared for - the Doctor had waited for her to arrive as she said she would not have been able to go home and not think about her unless she saw her before she left! That night there was no fuss with her mum, grandad and myself staying with her in fact they told us we were welcome to stay in the room with her as long as we wanted. A nurse answered all our questions thoroughly and stayed with us for a long time - All the nursing staff not only were very knowledgeable about her condition but also were able to get out of her her fears (she was crying a lot) for what was going to happen (she got told she would be put to sleep - and got upset as she thought she was going to die as her pet had been 'put to sleep') but the wonderful nurse was able to spend time with her reassuring, literally hand holding her. The teaching staff were brilliant - she was in isolation but they made her time much better with everything they did. The doctors were awesome and spoke in child friendly terms all the time. The housekeeper was fantastic and the days and nights I stayed she helped me tremendously just having a chat. We were a long way from home but didnt feel isolated at all. We were always treated with total respect. Even when she got home and her mum wanted advice or information she always got a prompt response when ringing Nottingham E17. I cant fault the Doctors, nurses, teachers, theatre staff (even the staff dressed as clowns that visited and cheered us all up) everyone at this hospital were fantastic. We owe a massive debt of gratitude to the staff on E17 and my grandaughter owes her fantastic recovery to these people - I would truly recommend this hospital. She spent 10 nights at this hospital during this time she had two operations, kidney dialysis through the neck and stomach, blood transfusions, platelet transfusions and nasal feeds and numerous medication. I sent the following message to friends and family as soon as we arrived as we knew she was in the best place in the country for her condition: 'For those that know whats happening she is definately in the right place now they are brilliant here. Old hospital but with staff that know what they are doing feel more at ease' Thank you to all the staff at your wonderful hospital.
