"Use of staff time"

I had a small op a week ago in the afternoon. All patients were called at 12 noon and procedures started at 14. 00. I had taken a book and a sandwich, but watched whilst the other patients who had brought nothing became progressively more anxious.

Prior to the operation I completed a 4 or more page questionnaire requiring, name address, telephone number, details of next of kin, medical history etc. 4 times. I had also been asked to complete a similar form and bring it with me on the day of the op. I believe that I also filled in similar details at the out patients clinic.

Can I suggest that you look into this matter and free up costly nurses time and make their job more meaningful. Do you use any it? Could the majority of patients just fill the data directly on to a standard form using a tablet. This would reduce the staff team by one.

On leaving the staff nurse typed out a letter for an appointment at a clinic to have my stitches removed. I then received a second more formal letter from the Victoria hospital. Why was it needed? ? ?

The actual operation and medical skill and nursing support was excellent, but during the op 2 nurses only role seemed to be clerical or noting down my BP.

Thank you for taking the time to tell us abut your recent experience in hospital. I was pleased to hear your positive comments about staff and recognise the issues you raise in relation to the administrative side of things. The nursing staff have also raised similar concerns and this has resulted in a piece of work to look at streamlining the documentation which will avoid duplication. The move towards an electronic record is also something which will help on this front, though it does take some time to implement new systems and ways of working.
