"A&E care"

About: Leicester Royal Infirmary

On 25 November 14 I accompanied my 91 year old mother to A&E Leicester where she received excellent care for respiratory and heart failure. Also renal complications. She had been assessed and taken there by following excellent service from 4 paramedics. Her condition was assessed at A&E professionally and with diligence. Treatment was administered to include a diarrhetic. She was transferred from resus to majors to await transfer to a ward. Once the diarrhetic took effect she became desperate to use the toilet. I made the request for assistance on her behalf to a group of 3 female nurses. After a couple of minutes a male nurse aged about 35 came to help my mother use the toilet. I felt this showed a complete lack of common sense, empathy and respect for her dignity. The matter was resolved when I went back to the 3 nurses who between them were able to help my mother. This took the gloss off what was exemplary service from the A&E department. I would like to particularly thank and commend the Staff nurse who cared for my mother in Resus and the consultant . He demonstrated outstanding empathy for my mother's clinical and emotional well being. He also showed a terrific sense of humour entirely appropriate to the situation. Thank you and well done.

Response from Leicester Royal Infirmary

Dear Reviewer Thank you for your kind words. We are really pleased to see that you and your mother had a largely positive experience. Patient dignity is very important to us, so we are sorry that at one stage the assistance we offered wasn't appropriate. That said, thank you for raising this at the time. We will feed this back to the service so that they are aware. Thank you again for your feedback and for your praise of the four paramedics, along with the staff nurse and consultant in resus. We wish you and your mother well in her recovery. Kind regards Robert Knight Communications Team Leicester’s Hospitals
