"A 10 day stay in ward A3"

About: St Helier Hospital

The nurses were very good apart from one night when only agency nurse were on duty, it was obvious they did not want to be there to help anyone and also the ward sister was unhelpful and rude to both myself and my husband. The surgeon and doctors were very informative on treatment. Physio was very limited. Food was inedible. I cannot see how anyone can recover from a major operation with the food provided. Hot food was cold. Sauces were gloopy, dishes were not recognisable and even the sandwiches ordered were different when given to you. I have never met anyone who would normally eat rice pudding with custard (it looked like an inverted fried egg) and I was told by a nutritionist that many people ate that at home. There were no fresh seasonal vegetables, they could not even manage a jacket potato with butter and cheese and get all 3 items on the plate. After a few days I was told I was borderline anaemic, was offered pills, instead my husband brought in a meal every evening. This worked but should not have been needed. Others on the ward said they envied the fresh food I was having (even the lady with the food trolley commented). Occupational therapy lady was useless. After endless discussions she still managed to order the wrong equipment for me to return home and I had even left the hospital before the equipment had arrived at my home. There is no 'joined upness' with care , I have no idea how anyone manages to cope without someone at home to fight for you.
