"Day Surgery Experience"

About: Rotherham Hospital

On Saturday the 1st November I was admitted for surgery for a frozen shoulder and whilst the initial experience was satisfactory after the operation I was transferred to Keppel Ward and in early afternoon I was informed I could go home. My partner collected me at around 3.00pm, however on getting home I noticed blood oozing from the bandage. My partner phoned the ward and we were asked to return which we did at 4.00pm.After a short wait a nurse removed all the dressings and cleaned the area and re dressed the wound and we returned home. However at around 9.30pm the wound was bleeding heavily and leaking blood. Yet again I phoned the ward and we were asked to return at 10,pm.On arrival we were advised that a doctor had been called but that there may be a wait as only one doctor was on duty. Some 2hrs later the doctor arrived and apologised for the wait and he stripped all the dressing off and appeared to make good job of the redressing. we got home at 12.45am. Next morning I awoke to find the wound had leaked badly in the night and my night clothes bedding and pillow were saturated in blood, the mattress was also very badly stained. Yet again I phoned the ward and the Charge Nurse said come back and she would ask for a doctor to attend. I returned to the ward at 8.30am and the staff were very helpful informing that a doctor was aware and would be with us as soon as possible. I was shown to the GP Consulting room and my partner was offered a cup of tea. A nurse kept us informed and kept checking to see if I was alright and eventually a Registrar and another doctor arrived stripped off the dressings and said the wound needed stitching! This was done and the wound redressed and hopefully that has been satisfactory. My concern is that it took so long to rectify the problem and why wasn't the wound stitched in the first place. Also our mattress which is only about 12 months old has been very badly stained and will probably need replacing a t a cost of over £200.
