This hospital has been exceptional throughout my pregnancy and since the birth of my son. From the initial scan at 12 weeks, all appointments were clearly communicated, fully explained and dealt with in an efficient and friendly manner. When it was discovered that I had placenta previa, additional scans were provided to monitor if there were any changes in the position of the placenta and throughout this it was explained to me what this may mean further down the line with my pregnancy. At nearly 24 weeks I had to be admitted to the maternity department as I had experienced a bleed due to my placenta. The care I received from the midwives and doctors in this department was superb and all along I knew I was in very capable hands. This was the first of three admissions for the same problem over the following three weeks, and each time, the care I received was beyond reproach. At 32 weeks, I had to have an emergency C-section due to a combination of high blood pressure and the heart rate of the baby dropping. The attention received was immediate and precise, and once again, the care given by the midwives and doctors was outstanding. My son, who was born weighing 3lbs and 3oz, was then kept on the neonatal department for just over 4 weeks to monitor his progress. At all times the nurses and doctors kept us fully informed with what was being done and kept us involved with the process, training us on how to feed using a nasal tube, how to change his nappy while he was in an incubator and how best to hold a baby that was so tiny and delicate. We were encouraged to visit as often as we wanted and to stay as long as we wanted, and when we couldn't be there, they were only a phone call away, keeping us updated on how he was doing and giving us additional advice and support when requested. When it came time for him to be able to come home, we had the opportunity to stay in a "flat" set-up within the neonatal department, where we were in sole control of looking after our son, while knowing that the nurses were just outside should we experience something we were uncertain of or worried about. On the day he was leaving, they gave us training as to how to administer the medicines he was going home with. Since leaving the neonatal unit, we have received regular visits from the community nurse, who continues to provide support for us, whilst ensuring that our son is continuing to make the good progress that both we and they are looking for. We couldn't be happier with the service we received from the maternity and neonatal departments at Russells Hall, and would fully recommend the hospital to anyone. Thanks for everything.
