I experienced a terrifying nose bleed at 4.30am on Sunday morning in late February. My husband called an ambulance which arrived in a few minutes and I arrived at Northern General Hospital at 5.30am. I was put on a chair in a cubicle with a bowl, a box of tissues and told to keep my head back and nip my nose tightly and was left there till 9.00am. By this time I was covered in blood, coughing up a large amount of congealed blood into the bowl and terrified. I am 79yrs old and never had a nose bleed, not even a small one. A nurse then decided to bring me an ice pack and I was eventually taken to another small room and attended by a man. I think he was a doctor but I’m not sure. I couldn’t understand what he was saying; I don’t think he knew either. Finally a young lady said I was being transferred to the Hallamshire as they didn’t have anyone to deal with ENT. I was disgusted, and wondered why I wasn’t taken there in the first place. However, the treatment I then received at the Hallamshire was excellent.
