"I am scared for my friend"

About: Raigmore Hospital / Accident & Emergency Raigmore Hospital / General Surgery Raigmore Hospital / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as a friend),

A friend of mine has been experiencing a lot of pain. During their time in hospital they experienced a lack of effort from staff, been given no answers or guidance on the status of their health and being repeatedly admitted and released.

My friend has gone some days having never seen a doctor. They did a basic x-ray, stool and blood samples all revealing nothing. They talked about an MRI scan and cancelled it. They were at a loss. Instead of persevering and trying to figure out what is wrong with my friend, they just continued to administer pain relief and release my friend from hospital.

Nurses saying such things like "oh you're looking better now, maybe you should be going home". And then being re admitted later that night with extreme pain again.

Pain was quoted as a "9 out of 10" with my friend lying in a ball crying; collapsing/fainting and throwing up. An ambulance took him to hospital on one occasion.

Why are the NHS not looking after my friend? This experience has left me distraught and upset, and I fear to ever visit Raigmore about my own health in the future.

Dear scaredfriend 2014

I am sorry to hear about your friend and can understand why you are upset. I am not clear if you friend is still in hospital or not. If your friend would like me to look into this please can you ask them to email me maimie.thompson@nhs.net or call me 01463 704722. Linda Kirkland the interim director for the hospital will also pick this up as she reads all Patient Opinion postings. We will do our very best to help.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

Update posted by scaredfriend2014 (a friend)

Thank you Maimie and Linda for your replies.

Sorry for not being clear. He is still in hospital at the moment. I think this is the fourth time in the last week he has been in (having been told to go home/etc and then having to come back in with bad pain).

I am just upset that he hasn't been told what is wrong with him, and I am frustrated that the doctors and nurses cannot help him more. It feels as if he is just lying there, on painkillers, waiting for it to pass.
