"A dilemma"

About: University Hospital Ayr

(as the patient),

I have an appointment at Ayr Hospital in November, as I’m in my 80s, have had two hip replacements and have limited mobility I rang the number on the appointment letter to arrange transport.

I live on one of the islands so will depend on the ferry to come across to the mainland and from there to get a bus to the hospital. I was told that I would be eligible for ambulatory transport to and from the ferry.

This leaves me with a dilemma whether to cancel the appointment or worry about managing the journey without any assistance.

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

by Poster184,

I am sorry to take so long to respond and I am sure you have been vexing over this all that time. I have spoken to the patient transport (Scottish Ambulance) service on 0300 123 1236 and they have assured me that it will be ‘worked out’ to suit your needs.

There are several options. One option is that you can be collected from your home, taken to the boat and when you arrive on the mainland, you will be collected and taken to the hospital. Another option is that a crew can be sent over to the island to bring you back across to the mainland to escort you. If you want to contact me on either 01563 826222 or eunice.goodwin@aapct.scot.nhs.uk and let me know your name, address and appointment date, we can look into it for you, alternatively, if you contact the transport service on 0300 123 1236 and discuss it with them directly.

I do hope it all goes smoothly for you but I have been assured it will be arranged to suit your needs whether you come through me or go direct to the service.

Kind regards,

Eunice

p.s. There are some difficulties for the ambulance service if people live on an extremely remote island, but I suspect if you are coming to Ayr Hospital that you will not be coming from one of these islands.
