"A&E Sunday evening in October 2014-broken fingers"

About: Stoke Mandeville Hospital

I was seen promptly on arrival at a and e by the triage nurse who suspected dislocation of my middle finger and despatched me off for Xray. Not too long a wait for xray and then seen quickly by a&e staff who showed me my xray(fractured finger), discussed the options, and attempted to contact the plastic surgeons for final decision. He had decided to straighten finger and apply splint as phone rang from plastics confirming this. Excellent patient manner as local anaesthetic was applied, Sent off for 2nd xray to check bone alignment which also found out ring finger was fractured too. This caused him a quandary as 2 splints shouldnt be applied to adjacent fingers and he was very insistent that I should see the plastic surgeons that night. He found out that Id be fifth in a queue and wouldn't be seen for at least 2 hours- so told us to find food and a drink before going back to the plastics dept. A&E staff were excellent, calm, unhurried and wanting the best possible care for me. Though late at night the plastic surgeon listened to my request to be able to fly, put my hand in half plaster and checked the position of the fingers with another xray. I was impressed by the care received.
