"Disappointed with Basildon Hospital "

About: Basildon University Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I was very disappointed with Basildon Hospital

Wednesday 18th March, I went to the x-ray dept for an x-ray on my hip. I was taken through to the cubicles and told to remove my trousers and put the gown on open at the back (that was all fine) but the gown was all creased and was already hanging on the peg in the cubicle (so it obviously had already been used). Also it was too small and I had to come out into the walkway trying to cover my back up. The lady that took me in for the x-ray thought this was quite funny and was giggling, well I am afraid I did not find it funny at all. I could be seen by the patients in the waiting area. I found this very embarrassing and am thoroughly disgusted. In the past, I have always been given a clean gown from a pile and it has always fitted so that it covered where it should.

The next problem was in Pathology. I also had to have a blood test, so went straight round there. It was really busy, there was only one person doing the blood tests, and while I understand that there are, breaks, sickness, holidays, to be taken into consideration this does not seem to be a one off. I was in that department the other week and it was the same on 18th March. I got up and walked out again, in disgust. Someone in charge should be checking all this out and getting things in place to stop it happening again. It’s all well and good that you put signs up about people getting irate, what can you expect with the sort of treatment that I received?

I would like to offer this patient my sincere apologies for the standard of care she received when visiting my department. All staff are instructed to provide patients with clean gowns from the linen trolley, to ensure it fits and to help a patient, if necessary, to put it on properly. If a gown cannot be properly fastened at the back, staff should offer a second gown with the opening at the front to preserve dignity.

I am extremely disappointed to hear that a member of my staff found the situation funny and failed to provide a second gown, let alone a fresh one. I would like to assure this lady that I take this issue very seriously and will be raising it at the next staff meeting.
