As a relative it was extremely distressing to have my Daughter put on section 3 and very difficult to communicate with the staff from support workers through to consultant pyschiatrist who in almost 6 weeks had little or no time to discuss my Daughters care. It is great shame that during periods of pyschoses and complete delusions the family who know her were not involved other than to ask if we think she has improved. Had I and my Daughters husband been approached and consulted and listened to of her normal state of mind and the treatments known to work perhaps recovery would have been a smoother shorter time. It took 3 weeks and a lot of frustration to finally get the psychiatrist to change her to medication we know has proven to work effectively and bring out of pyschoses. Under a section 3 for treatment surely it is paramount to review previous history and consult with relatives as to the best interest of the person detained for treatment as to any medication that has proved to be effective in the first instance. I firstly have to say that there are a number of excellent staff on the ward who granted work hard with patients. It is just such a shame with the patient staff ratio they have no time to actually talk/support the patients which is after all what is crucial for many to recover. That said there are also a handful of extremely rude and what appears on the surface to be very stressed out staff. After almost 6 weeks it is very apparent no compassion or support is given to patients let alone relatives. At a time when my daughter was very poorly I cannot believe that following her being bitten twice by another very poorly person how I was treated with complete disregard and told well their all here because their not well. I'm sorry to sound selfish but do I care no I don't I only care its my daughter that is not being looked after or safeguarded as would any other relative. No follow up or discussion offered or explanation when it was questioned. Thinking some of my Daughters thoughts or irrational behaviour is funny (in my ear shot)during pyschoses is Disgusting when I and the family are completely shocked and devastated enough. I could add far more to this but the calculation appears that the staff are either not trained effectively, are poorly supported or just don't care.
