"From Hospital Referral to Post Operation Care: 5..."

About: York Hospital

From the moment I was referred to the Hospital by my GP, I was well informed, communicated with, treated with respect, listened to and given all of my options very clearly in a professional but friendly way. I felt at ease and in good hands. For my Pre-Op Assessment, it was booked swiftly (having received a letter to ask for any dates they should avoid) and was booked in with a very helpful Doctor. He made the relevant checks and spent time to sit down and clearly talk me through my operation with all of the benefits and risks clearly outlined. The day of my operation came round and was again welcomed and made to feel completely at ease. I was taken through to the day ward to await my op and was introduced to the nurses who I would be seeing throughout my stay. A nice touch which could have easily been overlooked. Whilst waiting the anaesthetist came and introduced himself and explained his role and his involvement, then a doctor came and explained what was going to happen. By the time I was taken to the theatre I was very well informed of what was going on and about to happen thanks to the care taken by the staff to keep me informed. I had a good chat a laugh with some of the nurse staff who were assisting the anaesthetist and surgeon who were very polite and friendly. The anaesthetist explained every step of his procedure before and during his role which was very reassuring. The next thing I remember was waking up in a clean environment been spoken to by one of the nurses asking how I was and giving me a brief overview of where I was and what was going on. After a short while I was taken back to the ward and offered some rest time before Tea and Toast (standard). The surgeon (or one of them I believe) came to see and explained the procedure (which all went perfectly) and offered some advice about caring for myself and things to avoid. He was very friendly and kept things up beat. Once I was ready for discharge, I was given my prescription for pain relief and wheel to the discharge lounge. The lounge felt a little quiet and stale so I asked if I could wait in the cafe area which wasn't a problem. She also queued and got me a Costa coffee as I couldn't walk easily and was desperate for a cuppa. This was all yesterday and now resting at home. I cannot praise the NHS and especial the York Hospital team who orchestrated a medical procedure from beginning to end in the most seamless, professional way with a very personal touch throughout... All amongst all of the other people being cared for, which I wouldn't even imagine how many of them there are. A big thank you to everyone who was involved in my treatment at the York Hospital.
