"In my opinion it's not child friendly until you reach their departments"

Grandchild who suffers from mesenteric adenitis was sent in by ambulance on advice from First Responders.

Quickly seen, but the staff did not seem organised and one female nurse started to deal with her. Then a male nurse came and took over but was slow and set up her arm for taking blood laying out all the tubes etc. He then left the room for a good few minutes leaving her with her arm hurting as cannula hanging in downward direction gravity pulling "stinging" then he returned and took blood. He then left the cannula in and even though child was crying, there was no reaction from him. I called another female nurse to ask if there was anything to help take away the "stinging" as it was distressing my grandchild -no nothing "It is like, when you get a bit of wood in your skin! " I suggested a splinter-"Yes".

So my grandchild was put on the children's ward Phoenix and after several hours - we had to leave her still uncomfortable, with a cannula hanging from her skin. The confusing thing was the first lady nurse had came back and said "Oh I was going to do that! " (Bloods ) so I was left wishing she had - as may be she would have been a bit more kind.

The next morning we arrived to find an angel had wrapped a soft open textured bandage around the offending item and the happiness was evident - couldn't see it and gravity was not dragging on it and it wasn't being knocked, when moving. Why could the first person not have done this procedure - yes, I understand the need to access the vein but even a small piece of gauze would have prevented the discomfort and shown T L C. I want to prevent another child being unnecessarily distressed as they are already in awe of the huge hospital entrance - my grand child said "It's like an airport!" In my opinion it's not child friendly until you reach their departments.
