"Staff were excellent but overrun"

About: Freeman Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as the patient),

Having recently returned home from ward 19 at the freeman hospital the staff were excellent but over run by the sheer volume of the patients turnover, so care was spasmodic - ie left in toilet for around 25 minutes, no morning or afternoon cup of tea most days, but you can live with that.

The thing you could not live with was the appalling meals if you could call them that. The menu was rubbish and when it came it looked disgusting sometimes as if it had been picked up of the floor and slopped back on the plate. I and most of the ladies in my bay seemed to have never ate a main course but instead lived on soup and puddings or what visitors brought in.

Thank you for taking the time to post your review on the NHS Choices website. Due to technical issues we have just received details of your postings so apologies for the delay in responding to your feedback. We would like to take the opportunity to thank you for your extremely kind comments regarding the nurses and staff on Ward 19 Freeman Hospital which have been shared with all the staff on the ward. We are however, very sorry that you felt that the ward was overrun at times by the volume of patients which impacted upon the care your received whilst recovering from your operation. Although Ward 19 is a busy ward we strive to provide excellent care at all times and we would like to offer an apology that we fell short of this on this occasion. With regard to your comments about the standard of food while in the Freeman Hospital. Again, this is very disappointing feedback and we are very sorry that the menu and presentation of the meals did not meet the standard you rightly expected. All of our hot meals are produced fresh daily in our own kitchens and we have many procedures in place to try to ensure that meals are of the highest quality. The catering manager visits the wards on a regular basis to gain patient feedback about the meals and we also we do bi-monthly food tasting with patient representatives. If you would like to discuss the standard of the food in more detail in order that the Catering Manager, Mr Geoff Moyle can investigate any particular issues, please contact him on 0191 2448681 or e-mail geoff.moyle@nuth.nhs.uk.
