My father suffers from Alzheimer's disease and has recently been cared for at the Sally Sherman Ward of the East Ham Care Centre, Shrewsbury Road, East Ham. Having had two absolutely awful experiences at other centres, one a privately run BUPA care home and a short stay at Mile End hospital, it was with quite some trepidation that we took him to the Sally Sherman Ward. We needn't have worried, what a difference! On first arrival we were greeted warmly by every member of staff. They had taken the time and effort to read up on my father and immediately addressed him by his first name as if greeting an old friend. They spoke to him with such warmth and understanding that he was almost instantly put at ease and settled. They then verified with us all his details, medication, needs, his likes and dislikes. First impression counts and we can only describe ours as outstanding, 10 out of 10. The staff, all staff, from the senior mangers to the cleaners are always willing to help and go about their duties, not only with compassion, professionalism, ensuring dignified treatment of every patient within their care, but they do it with a smile, interacting with the patients and treating every single one of them as an individual. They do this with such ease, the sign of true professionals. Their interactions with the family of patients is also outstanding. They know what we are going through and make every effort to help. There are numerous activities laid on for the patients during the day, which combined with the beautifully decorated ward, with its distinct, colourful, areas, provides a wonderful setting. Over the weeks we have visited my father the Sally Sherman Ward never ceases to impress us. We think this is a reflection of the atmosphere within the ward which is down to the staff, their training and dedication. The quality of care provided is quite simply second to none and I would describe it as exemplary. If only other providers of care for those with dementia could emulate the work carried out here, the life of those with dementia and their families would be so much better. Would we recommend the Sally Sherman Ward? Yes, 100%
