"Very unpleasant experience"

About: Cumberland Infirmary

I attended this hospital for a gastroscopy. The procedure was very unpleasant due to the fact I felt completely unable to breathe. I was asked by the endoscopist to stop reflex gagging as this made the procedure more difficult for her and it would take longer to perform. The nurse commented to her that I had begun to sweat a lot, (a reaction to feeling unable to breathe). I tried to sit up due to this but the nurse held me down. After the procedure I commented on how awful this procedure had been and that I felt completely unable to breathe. The nurse replied, "So you won't be coming back then!" Wow, what an attitude to a patients obvious discomfort and my inability to stop this procedure.

I am so sorry to hear of this experience which falls below our usual standard.I wish to apologise for any distress caused. I have raised this with the appropriate managers and will ensure that this is addressed with the team as a matter of priority. With regards Alison Patient Experience
