"the hospital itself was clean ..."

About: Derriford Hospital

(as a relative),

What I liked

the hospital itself was clean and tidy and the level of care my husband received after being airlifted in was second to none.

What could be improved

unfortunately the contact between staff and myself was non existent.

i was contacted just on the day he was admitted to ask if i knew which fortunately i did.

after travelling for over 2 hours to reach plymouth we went to a & e and after asking a nurse what was happening a neurologist came and examined my husband and left again without a word.

the next day we arrived to find his bed empty and stripped which caused great distress only to find he`d been moved.

his jewellry had been bagged my husband was upset that his trousers were missing as they had money in.when i approached a nurse about this she made a call and told me that if they were not in his green bag then they had been disposed off but unfortunately they had not bothered to check the pockets so all his money was disposed of as well.

because of the travel time from north devon and relying on friends for transport i was unable to visit for the last 2 days of my husband`s stay so phone calls were my only means of communication.

in these 2 days my husband was moved again twice unknown to me until i rang to speak to him and was told he was no longer there.

on the friday i spent 20 mins being transferred from one ward to another as no-one seemed to know where he had been moved to.

on the day of his departure it was nothing short of a farce.

my husband rang me at 9am to say he was being released at 12.30pm and could i arrange for someone to collect him.i also asked for a nurse to ring me when he was out of surgery to let me know all was ok.i arranged a lift for him and his brother than rang to check the time of his release only to be told he wasn`t being relesed that day but the next so i had to ring the person picking him up to tell them to come back.

at 1pm my husband rang again to ask why i wasn`t there.i told him what had been said and laft it at that.at 5pm there was a knock at my door and there stood my husband with 2 ambulance men.

i had not been told he was coming home or rung after his op.

Anything else?

although the hospital is clean and tidy and the staff are brilliant with the patients there needs to be more consideration of family members and when a phone call is promised this needs to be followed up.
