"We can’t fault the staff we met, they all went the extra mile"

About: Sunderland Royal Hospital / Accident and emergency Sunderland Royal Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as a relative),

My Gran was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital A&E on a Saturday. She was found on the floor with a fractured neck femur. When she got there, the nurse Derek was absolutely amazing and had my Gran laughing and also kept us updated throughout.

She was then transferred up to ward D43 the Orthopaedic Ward. The care there was brilliant. She had an operation on the Sunday morning. She was then back on the ward on Sunday afternoon where the care she received was second to none.

At 10pm on the Sunday night, they called us to let us know that her condition had deteriorated and asked us to come back to the hospital. The doctors and nurses were so attentive to Gran and us. Sadly she died the following morning at 8am. She was 91.

We can’t fault the staff we met. This should have been a horrible experience but their care made it hugely special for us. They all went the extra mile. One thing touched us more than anything. Just after Gran died, her named nurse gave her a kiss and said “Good night, sweetheart. ” It was obvious he really cared.

You have to give credit where it’s due and I would like the Trust’s Chief Executive to hear about this.
