"Confused by appointment"

Having been referred to the Ophthalmology department following a series of tests at the opticians, I took an afternoon off work to attend this session with a consultant. I assumed all relevant further tests would be carried out.

The consultant looked briefly at both my eyes but then said I would have to return at a later date for the necessary test. This puzzled me, as I had assumed that was the purpose of this consultation.

In that sense, this consultant felt like waste of time and a waste of afternoon off work. Surely also a waste of resources?

I should add that the consultant was very personable and helped to put me at ease – very helpful. Nonetheless though, I left feeling bemused and unsure what the purpose of the exercise had been.
