"Happy with Physiotherapy "

About: North West Boroughs Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust Whiston Hospital / General surgery

(as the patient),

I was referred through my GP to see a physiotherapist and saw Louise Hitchmough at Lowe House in St Helens who was very good and was able to diagnose PFJ dysfunction in my right knee. It was such a relief to finally know that I wasn't imagining the pain I'd left in my knee for the past 10+ years and that something was actually wrong, and even better that it could be rectified. Louise first tried some manipulation of the knee and taped it up on one occasion and also gave me some exercises to try at home. She then referred me to to the Lower Limb class at Whiston Hospital and I was able to get my first appointment to attend within a couple of weeks. I have now completed the 6 week course of classes and it has helped immensely. My knee is feeling better than it has in a long time and I am motivated to improve my overall fitness level and continue with the exercises I have been shown. The physiotherapist who led the classes (Vicky Ashworth) was lovely and very approachable which helped make the experience a lot easier. Vicky was happy to answer any questions I had and give advice. During my physio appointments and classes it was noticed that my balance was not so great and so I filled out a self referral form to have an assessment about this and the accompanying bad back. I was given an appointment very quickly and saw another excellent physiotherapist (Steph Hewitt) who assessed my back and listened to my previous medical history (major abdominal surgery for spontaneous splenic rupture in July 2013 - from which I received excellent care also at Whiston Hospital) and advised that I would benefit from attending the hospital's 'Core Stability' class. Unfortunately there is quite a long waiting list for the 5pm class and I am unable to make the 8am class so I am still waiting for a place to become available. It would be really useful for another class to be put on as it seems to be a service required by a lot of patients.

Overall, I am very happy with the care I've received at Whiston Hospital and the 5 boroughs physios.
