"My Mother"

About: James Paget University Hospital

My mother was admitted on the 28/08/14 with an irregular heart beat and a water infection, all really part of her complications of diabetes. She was first admitted to the EADU, then moved on to the Emergency Ward with hyperkalaemia and a chest infection. When her breathing deteriorated she was transferred to the Respiratory Ward. The nurses and HCA's there were brilliant. My mother was given specialist care which helped her breathing and helped to get her diabetes under control. But then she developed C Diff, and was transferred to an isolation room on the Cohort/Medical Ward without access to the specialist equipment of the Respiratory Ward or staff with the training to use it. When my mother deteriorated some of my relatives badgered the staff and she was moved to a high dependency bed on the ICU and then back to the Respiratory Ward. She passed away on 04/10/14 aged 73. I will now try to explain my rating. As I said before, the nursing staff were wonderful and I cannot fault them or their behaviour. But I will always think about that decision made at some much higher level to move my mother to that isolation room and whether that contributed to her passing. I think that question will haunt me for the rest of my life.

First of all, can I say how sorry I am for your recent loss. I am sure this is a very difficult time for you. Thank you for the positive comments you made about the nursing/HCAs. I am not clear from your review whether you had the opportunity to talk to a member of staff about the reasons for your mother's move and how cases of infection are dealt with to ensure they don't spread to other patients. If this didn't happen, and you feel it would be helpful, please do get in touch with me direct and I can take this forward for you.
