"Our experience of Grantham's accident & emergency "

About: Grantham & District Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as a parent/guardian),

I received a call from my son at 5: 00am on a Thursday, he is a student at NTU. He obviously felt very unwell & I said I would go & pick him up to bring him home. William has an auto-immune disease, when picks up viruses, colds etc he can more ill than others. However I got him in the car & during the car journey I felt that this worse than normal & suggested that we go straight to Grantham Hospital.

We arrived at A & E in the mid evening, no one was waiting to be seen and my son was vomiting. After going through the necessary with the receptionist we were soon called in to see a nurse who was extremely competent, very thorough and carried out the normal checks. Realising that he was very unwell bloods were taken quickly & sent off for analysis.

The doctor was going off duty but took the time to see my son & reassure him that they would sort him out. A second nurse came down to help out from the heart wants. Another A & E doctor took over & the medical doctor came to see William. A saline drip & paracetamol drip was put up just as his body was becoming overcome with the fever, but he soon started to feel more comfortable, and he was also given an oxygen mask.

The appropriate anti-biotic was prepared & administrated shortly afterwards. Soon my son's body started to respond to the drugs. He was diagnosed with severe tonsilitis, complicated by IgA Nephropathy. Eventually he was transferred to EAU receiving appropriate care by the nurses & the medical doctor.

He was placed in a room off the main ward where he spent the night, he was discharged the next day in the early evening. The care he received during his short stay was exceptional by all concerned.

Well done Grantham Hospital!
