My father was admitted to Wythenshawe the Neil Cliffe Cancer Care Unit on 26th Feb 2009. He was suffering from Mesothelioma.(asbestosis) When he was admitted, we told the nursing staff he was due to be drained (he had a permanent drain fitted to his lung which needed draining every other day as the build up of fluid caused him a great deal of pain). When I arrived the next day in the evening, he had not been drained, I went to see the nurse who explained that there had not been a trained nurse to drain him. As I was trained I said I would do it if they provided the drain bottle etc. She was happy for me to do this and then asked if I could train her as she didnt know how to do it. My father was on constant pain killers, these were given to him when they remembered, he had to ask for them as they were kept in a locked cupboard. He had a sore bottom for which he had ointment. When asked why they hadnt washed him and applied the ointment, we were told it was not down on the list. He was in agony for all the 5 days he was in there. One day he had to ask why he hadnt been given any breakfast, it was 10am. The treatment he received was diabolical. He was discharged on 3rd March and sadly died in excrutiating pain at home on 5th March. This is a man who has worked for 50 years and paid into a system that in the end let him down. I think it's disgusting.
