My daughter fell off monkey bars at school today and hurt her left wrist. Unfortunately she is left handed. Having seen her two hours later in pain and with a slight wrist deformity I hurried off to PRI.
I am, admittedly, a doctor myself (albeit not one with any vast knowledge of bones) but I pitched up at PRI as a worried mother having not registered any of my family with a local GP yet as I have only recently moved to the area. The receptionist was polite and efficient, smiling throughout, the triage nurse straight to the point and the waiting area was clean with a working TV screen to provide a distraction.
Within 90 minutes my daughter had been triaged, seen by a courteous, professional junior doctor, whizzed off to X-ray, diagnosed with a fracture and booked into a virtual (telephone) fracture clinic with the orthopaedic surgeons to ensure management is appropriate and check on my daughter. I have seen many sides of the NHS but PRI should be proud of their staff and the service they provide.
No, I don't think my daughter gets a great service because I'm a doctor. She gets a great service because the NHS in Scotland is brilliant when it is not overstretched or understaffed.
