"My sister has never felt so humiliated"

About: Wansbeck Hospital

(as a relative),

I am writing this on behalf of my sister as I feel this needs to be looked into.

My sister has had her teeth removed due to severe infection and is very self conscious now and has to wear dentures, a nurse that was working on the ward at the time stated to my sister if she want to give her husband oral to take the dentures out for a smoother ride. I think this is absolutely appalling.

What happened to treating people with empathy and compassion, dignity and respect obviously the 6Cs are not being practiced on this ward by some members of staff.

I have advised my sister to put a complaint in. She said she had never felt so degraded and humiliated, she lost her dignity and the staff had no respect.

I believe if the nurse cannot have empathy and treat people with respect instead of laughing at their mis-fortunes, she should re visit her occupation in life.

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am extremely concerned and upset that a member of Northumbria staff would ever think it is acceptable to speak to one our patients in such a disrespectful manner.

The behaviour you have described goes against all we stand for as an organisation - due to the very serious nature of this complaint you will appreciate why it is so important for us to investigate this and act immediately on our findings.

I would be very grateful if you could contact me at Annie.laverty@northumbria-healthcare.nhs.uk as soon as possible.

Many thanks for your support with this.

Annie
