My partner's mother, aged 97, "took to her bed" at home and refused to eat or drink for 5 days.
She was adamant that she did not want to go to hospital, but eventually, after a very kind out-of-hours doctor, we had her admitted under "incapacity" and she was taken in a real mess to Barnet General Hospital.
They were marvellous. Three nurses cleaned her up (and it must have been awful) and she was in Juniper ward for three weeks. They tried everything to get her to eat or drink and eventually had to take down the drip they had inserted. They were kindness itself and let us come in at all hours to see she was OK. Mother lasted over 12 days without any fluids then quietly passed away.
