"The death of my mother"

About: North Devon District Hospital / Acute Stroke Unit (ASU)

(as a relative),

My Mum had a catastrophic stroke at her home in September 2014. She was taken to North Devon District Hospital by ambulance from where a member of the ER staff called my home in London to advise me that I should make my way there as soon as possible.

I arrived at the hospital at 11pm to be advised that she was in a coma. A folding bed had already been supplied to her room in case I should wish to stay the night. Julie the staff nurse on duty was as comforting as she could be in the circumstances.

After staying with Mum for a while and talking to her I left and returned for doctors' rounds the following day. I was advised in the gentlest terms that her condition was terminal. Subsequently Mum left us that day at around 4pm.

Throughout she received the best possible palliative care and attention. Staff Nurse Catherine was of great assistance to me in coping with the experience and I will always be grateful to her and the other staff on duty that day.

Response from Jayne Kruszewski, Customer Relations Manager, Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust

Dear Relative

Thank you for posting your feedback regarding your recent experience during your hospital stay with your mother. I was very sorry to learn of your loss, and I would like to pass on my personal condolences, as well as those of the Trust's at what I can only imagine must be a very difficult time for you and the family.

I was pleased to see that staff had already prepared a bed for you, and that you were treated with empathy and dignity, and that your mother received the best care possible during her last few days. I have passed on your comments to the ward manager who will share them with the staff concerned, where I know they will be warmly received.

Kind regards
