"My recent stay in hospital"

Having just been discharged from the EAU after 6 days I feel it right to provide some feedback. Emergency Admittance Unit - amazing staff on this unit. Exceptional professional and provide the right balance of care, tailoring the needs of every single patient. From the senior doctors on the ward to the Housekeepers I pass on my heartfelt appreciation to all of you. Continuity of Care - I feel rather let down with the continuity of care during my stay in hospital. I was under a doctor and underwent a Colonoscopy on Thursday expecting the same doctor to see me on Friday to discuss a recovery plan. Unfortunately on Friday I was told this doctor had gone away for 10 days and I would be seen by another consultant. When the consultant eventually saw me on Friday (at the end of an undoubtedly very busy day) they spent less than 2 minutes telling me I would be staying in hospital over the weekend and they would see me again on Monday, stopping one medication and adding another for 3 days. On Monday I weas expecting to see the consultant but unfortunately I was told that they had left the hospital on completion of their clinic. A different doctor told me that I could go home and I asked about follow up medication as I had been on steroids for several weeks, which had been replaced while I was in hospital with other forms of steroids, I asked what my recovery plan would be to come off steroids, whereby the doctor told me I didn't need to take them anymore. (having now spoken to my GP he has put me back on the steroids for me to come off them slowly as is the norm). Discharge procedure - I feel that the discharge procedure in Grantham Hospital really does need to be reviewed. I was told at 1200hrs that I could go home, I was informed by the last doctor, but I was not seen until 1340hrs by anybody as this was a busy hand-over period. I was told I needed to take one more dose of Predsol which the nurse had in their possession, however, because of legal requirements it had to go to Pharmacy to be labelled. I asked how long it would be and I was told an hour (I needed to know so I could arrange transport home). I booked transport for 1.5 hours later, however at 1600hrs I was still waiting for the 1 bottle of predsol (4 hours after being told I could go home). As I had some of this medication at home from a previous hospital appointment I informed the nurse that I was going home there and then. This to me sullied a very productive stay in hospital. I do not believe it should take over 2.5 hours to place a label on a bottle, if the pharmacy is so busy then manning should be re-evaluated. I do not wish to come across as negative and I hope my comments are not viewed that way, I just felt that a couple of areas require review. But finally, could you please pass on my appreciation to all of the staff on EAU as they are amazing!

Thank you for taking to time to share your story with us and we are sorry to read that the care and experience you received was not up to our expected standards.

We are currently working to improve our discharge process across the hospital and how we can effectively communicate the process to patients. We do know that this is a recurrent problem and sorry that we did not communicate effectively with you.
