This ward provided the best level of treatment and care that I have ever received in a hospital. The staff were well organised and some showed distinct care for their patients. There was, on the whole, a sense of professionalism, skill and pride in their work. The nurse practitioner exudes emapathy, understanding, depth of knowledge and skill which all helped me to feel that I was in very good hands. I do feel that this is a very well run ward. My only concern was that the noise levels were high from the nurse station and I felt that some of the activities and conversations taking place could have been held elsewhere. Also, the doctor on ward rounds could aspire to engaging with his patient rather than walzing into the ward and scooting off - afterall, healthcare should be a collaborative venture. Recognition that patients need to rest and sleep is vital to recovery and there did seem to be a belief amongst staff that sleep was not obtainable on a hospital ward. I would argue that changing some work practices (see above) and being more subtle in entering a ward and method of waking patients for blood pressure monitoring is required. Research has shown that soft music in any setting can aid recovery and this may be something that could be considered on this ward. Because its a hospital ward does not mean that a culture and atmosphere of being 'clinical' is always required. The staff on this ward were all friendly and approachable - especially the Nurse Assistant who always had a smile and nothing was too much trouble.
