The care I have had at Derby has been excellent, however I did have concerns about the phlebotomy department. The waiting room is very cramped and always busy - the staff obviously work very hard, but I have some concerns about their infection control practices. Each time I have had bloods taken the staff have not used hand washing or the alcohol gel before starting. They do not use gloves either - even though this is a recommended part of avoiding HAIs. The chair arm that my arm was resting on was split and had old, dirty micro pore tape around it. Not all staff were observed to be bare below the elbows either. The staff were very pleasant and obviously struggling to cope with the workload but alcohol gel only takes seconds.
