"No stimulation for patients"

About: Southmead Hospital

I have been visiting 2 family members at Southmead over the past 6 weeks and am astonished how patients confined to bed are left just staring at the ceiling with no stimulation at all (ie where are the tvs/radios that were at Frenchay to help with rehabilitation and boredom? As a member of the NHS I am disgusted with Southmead staff. Also, I witnessed a few occasions where patients' dignity were of very little concern to the staff ie one elderly gentleman was trying to get out of bed with nothing on below his waist and this was not noticed by the staff until I brought it to their attention.

Dear Anonymous – thank you for your feedback about your family’s experience. I am sorry to learn that they did not receive the stimulation I would expect for any of our patients. Provision of TV and radio services etc.in the new hospital was not a cost effective option for the current NHS providers due to the wide use of tablet devises by the public. Free Wi-Fi is now accessible for all inpatients, out-patients and those receiving dialysis. All Brunel wards have received Wi-Fi instruction cards that can be handed to the patient to help them log on to the system. We are also looking at providing tablet rental to patients without their own devices. I regret that staff where not on hand to protect patient dignity at all times as would be our intention. Thank you for intervening on the occasion you refer to. Kind Regards – Steve Sykes Advice and Complaints Team
