On the 31st December I tripped over injuring my arm and needed an ambulance , I asked to be taken to New Cross hospital but was advised that they were full and I would have to wait, the alternative was Walsall Manor I agreed to this due to the pain I was in and this was were luck my changed . I was seen quickly by an A/E Doctor who sent me for an X-ray I need to thank the radiographs on duty that evening I was in horrendous pain and the were extremely inventive using different items around the department to support my arm to enable me to have the X-rays . I would like to thank the porter who took time to fetch my partner from the waiting room on New Years Eve. I had a plaster applied in A/E this was some of the worse pain I've ever experienced in my life , I couldn't understand wether the hospitals employees who applied the plaster lacked compassion , knowledge of the injury , they failed to keep their patient informed and pain relief to an acceptable standard. Fortunately this lasted approximately 15mins and has not detracted from the excellent standard of care I received overall. The Doctors in A/E gave me a clear diagnosis and I was admitted to Ward 10. The staff from ward 10 were awesome I was admitted for 3 days , I had excellent standard of care with a positive managerial presence it was obvious to the observer that the staffing ratio at night was to low , the staff were constantly working at speed with unrealistic expectations being placed on staff, I had to wait for pain medication for a couple of hours it was clear that the staff were meeting the needs of the patient who had a higher priority the nurse apologised but I acknowledged that it was clear this was not her practice but staffing shortfalls My treatment was initially overseen by two doctors, there is a an obvious commitment by the Orthopaedic team to ensure their patients receive excellent personalised care with the whole team striving for best practice and outcomes. The Anaesthetist were excellent on both of my surgeries 10th January and 9th April 2014 making me feel totally relaxed and reassured The practitioner in the recovery suit was excellent on the 9th April The receptionists at the fracture are welcoming and helpful Olly the physiotherapist was extremely proactive with my treatment Staff in the plaster room were proactive with regards best outcomes for patient and an effective team member . The staff on ward 20 also provided an excellent standard of care The process for being admitted for surgery is clear and reassuring with staff demonstrating compassion and knowledge. The standard of cleanliness on all the wards has been of a very high standard. I have been receiving treatment from Walsall Manor since New Years Eve and overall it's been excellent I would recommend this hospital to anyone especially the Orthopaedic team.
