"Uncaring staff and noisy, unhygienic & crowded..."

About: Lister Hospital

Unfortunately we had to attend the paediatric A&E department with our teenager due to a hand injury. After a bit of searching we located the paeds A&E unit where we were greeted by a disinterested staff Nurse who assessed our teen before sending him through to the unit to be handed an x-ray form. When asked where to find the xray departement we got verbal instructions and were left to find the Radiology departement. After a lengthy wait and the xray we were sent back to the A&E unit which was packed with babies, toddlers, children and teenagers all in one tiny space. While we were there for the best part of 2 hours I sat next to an unaccompanied teenager, not once did I see a member of staff engaging with her apart from once when they asked her some details about relatives, all this could be overheard by everybody. During that same time I saw a young child, sitting also next to us, vomit on the floor . I would have expected a member of staff to come and attend to offer support and clean up but the parents were left to mop up the mess with paper collected from the WC and other parents offering wet wipes to clean up the poor child. Sad sight. To top it all off when we were finally seen this happened standing up in the corner by the exit door next to a curtained of cubicle. How unprofessional ! I could go into much more detail but I guess you all got the message. I am a nurse myself and I am proud to say I have never ever treated my patients and clients so thoughtless. Shame all this £million investment is wasted . Get your act together and care for your patients in a clean and dignified manner !

Thanks for getting in touch and we're sorry that your experience of the Lister's children's A&E was not a good one. Albeit located currently in a temporary location while it's long-term home is expanded and renovated (opens October 2014), there are aspects of your feedback that deserve further investigation. Would you mind emailing us at generalenquiries.enh-tr@nhs.net so that we can get your experience followed up? We hope that you give us that chance.
