"Pleasant staff but disorganised and inefficient"

I have had my eyes opened by a recent 3 day stay at York Hospital. The nurses, HCAs and junior doctors were pleasant and friendly and I found the consultant and his registrar to be really lovely. Overall I had good treatment and my problem was resolved but it all happened painstakingly slowly. The lack of communication between staff and the sheer inefficiency of the whole process was staggering. Everything happens at a snail's pace and only then when you ask, and ask again, and ask again. Far too many staff doing part of a job and then walking off and not coming back or then a colleague would come back and carry on two or three hours later. Patients in my ward were asking for pain relief and having to wait three hours to get it. At the consultant's 5pm ward round he said he wanted a patient putting on IV antibiotics. She ended up getting them at 1am after she had asked twice and I ended up trotting off to the nurses station at 11pm to remind them it hadn't been done. There were three or four things I asked for and I never got them (medication, information etc.) and got sick of asking in the end. Money is just wasted. I ended up having a scan I didn't require and patients who are waiting to go home are stuck there being fed and having their observations done for no reason. Far too many staff who don't seem to really know what they're doing. When I was admitted at 10am, there was an elderly lady sat dressed with her bags ready as she'd been told she could go home. She was discharged at 9pm after being sat there all day. Absolutely disgraceful to keep an old lady sat about like that and sent home in the dark. I was waiting to go home from mid afternoon and yet there are patients in wheelchairs sat in the corridors and I hear nurses saying they've no beds. Get things sorted out, discharge the patients who are ready to be discharged and you'd have the beds. Bingo, job done. The food is shockingly bad. Poor quality food lacking in nutrition. The evening meal consists of nasty prepacked service station sandwiches with a yoghurt or a chocolate biscuit or a packet of crisps. You cannot feed ill and convalescing patients that type of rubbish! There are good staff but there are also a lot of people, doctors included, who really need to up their game and get a bit of work done instead of doing half a job here and half a job there. With a good shake up and some organisation it could be great but as things are at the moment that place is shockingly inefficient. Small wonder the hospital's in debt as they may as well be flushing money down the loo.
