My partner came in for a hernia operation recently. She has a condition called EDS which means she is in pain a lot of the time. She also frequently collapses as she also suffers from vaso vagal syncope and mitral valve regurgitation.
The reason she was at Doncaster for this operation was because of her conditions her heart and subsequent complications that may have arisen. While the surgical team and anaesthetists were amazing, the same cannot be said for the care received on the ward. My partner was told that she must use her wheelchair to get around so as to reduce the risk of her collapsing and causing internal injuries. Despite asking to go to the toilet no-one helped her, so she went herself in considerable amounts of pain because also pain relief was insufficient. Her normal medication is codeine based for day to day use, but she was given paracetamol. If they had been aware of the condition, they would learn that pain relief is less effective in EDS sufferers!
She buzzed numerous times to ask for the toilet and no-one came but nurses stood at stations discussing shoes. This is unacceptable! I'm sure if their loved ones were in the same position, they would be asking these same questions!
Why was a woman who wasn't supposed to go to the toilet alone or walk was left in her bed and left to go alone? Why was pain relief not looked at realistically? Why are nurses stood around discussing fashion when patients are clearly suffering?
