In January this year I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety. I was referred to Six Degrees to see a counsellor. The first time I went for an appointment, I could barely speak two words without breaking down in tears or getting very upset. My appointed counsellor was helped me all these months and figuratively held my hand and talked me through to recovery. There was nothing "special" in the course of my treatment - most of it was her asking questions and listening, occasionally giving advice, but it was invaluable to talk to someone who wouldn't judge or lecture. I wanted to understand more in depth my condition and what it entailed. My practioner was very good in explaining it in an understandable manner and providing additional information references. I am not fully recovered but today I can definitely manage my symptoms and understand some causes a lot better. All thanks to Six Degrees!
The speed with which I got my first appointment could have been better - it took three to four weeks between my GP visit and my first appointment, and thinking retrospectively it would have been useful to know in advance what the next steps were after counselling - ie how many sessions I would receive followed by which "next stages". However, overall, it worked for me in that all I really needed was to talk to someone who could provide professional advice and help me understand what was going on by asking guiding questions, and that is the treatment I received. Once again, thank you Six Degrees, and special thanks to my practioner!
