"Poor aftercare after bowel surgery"

About: Medway Maritime Hospital / Gastroenterology

(as a relative),

My father was diagnosed with bowel cancer and recently had keyhole surgery to remove part of his bowel, small intestines and appendix. We could not fault the care in the high dependency ward and what the nurses have to put up with in regards to certain patients, I believe, they deserve a medal.

However, when he was moved to another ward before being discharged, the care was a different matter. Considering the surgery he had, they gave him laxatives and the first meal he had in about 4-5 days was cottage pie and a dessert. When the consultant paid him a visit, he was not happy at all with the fact that he was given such a big meal and laxatives after a big operation. Also due to the fact that his stomach was obviously sensitive and recovering from a big op.

When he eventually came to being discharged, we were given no information at all about after care, diet he should have or anything. My sister ended up calling and speaking to a gentleman at the beating bowel cancer charity who was extremely helpful and explained everything in layman's terms, which is all we basically wanted.

Thank you for taking the time to offer us your feedback.

I was pleased to read that the care your father received on the high dependency ward was faultless.

I can only apologise if the care was less than you would have expected when your father was then moved to another ward and the the lack of information given to you on discharge. I can fully appreciate your concerns. If you would like us to discuss this experience with the senior sister then please call the patient experience team on 01634 825004 so that we can identify the ward and offer some feedback.

Thank you

Thank you very much for taking the time to provide feedback on the care received by your Father. We strive to provide the very best care for our patients at all times and we are pleased that the care that he received on the High Dependency Care was of a high standard. We were disappointed to hear that the care was not as good on the other ward that your Father was admitted to and that he was not given appropriate food or discharge information. We would like to investigate further but will require more information in order for us to do this. Please can you contact our PALS team, so that we can look into this? http://www.medway.nhs.uk/for-patients/patient-advice-and-liaison-service/
