My father was diagnosed with bowel cancer and recently had keyhole surgery to remove part of his bowel, small intestines and appendix. We could not fault the care in the high dependency ward and what the nurses have to put up with in regards to certain patients, I believe, they deserve a medal.
However, when he was moved to another ward before being discharged, the care was a different matter. Considering the surgery he had, they gave him laxatives and the first meal he had in about 4-5 days was cottage pie and a dessert. When the consultant paid him a visit, he was not happy at all with the fact that he was given such a big meal and laxatives after a big operation. Also due to the fact that his stomach was obviously sensitive and recovering from a big op.
When he eventually came to being discharged, we were given no information at all about after care, diet he should have or anything. My sister ended up calling and speaking to a gentleman at the beating bowel cancer charity who was extremely helpful and explained everything in layman's terms, which is all we basically wanted.
