"Eye department - getting appointments"

About: Worthing Hospital

I need an annual appointment to check my ocular hypertension and I have also needed more urgent appointments, for example to check that new treatments are working properly. In all cases I find that appointments do not come through on a timely basis and I nearly always have to phone or email the hospital to get one. This wouldn't be so bad but I find my emails go unanswered and when I phone I get passed from pillar to post. On the last 2 occasions I have been on the phone for 2-3 hours before tracking down someone who can help. No-one takes responsibility and I get the impression that no-one cares either. On the last occasion I had to have an appointment within 6 weeks of my previous visit (to ensure that new medication keeping my eye pressure down to acceptable levels). I did not get an appointment through the post so I rang. I spent about 2 hours off and on the phone and I was eventually passed back to the person I first spoke to. I then gave up. Do these administrative people realise that if my eye pressure goes up my retina may be damaged and I may go blind!! I think the appointments 'system' is appalling and poses a threat to the health of people like me.
