"Nothing much - only a hand full ..."

About: Leicester Royal Infirmary

(as a relative),

What I liked

Nothing much - only a hand full of staff were polite and helpful.

What could be improved

Staff's attitude towards their patients and visitors. I agree health care professionals have the right to be confident in their job roles, but they do not have the right to be rude and arrogant. Only a small handful of staff were polite and helpful - the rest had the wrong attitude towards their patients.

Anything else?

My sister gave birth to her baby at the LRI in February, and she was very distressed by the whole experience at the hospital. I can honestly say that only 2 midwifes treated my sister with respect. Distress signs from the baby before she was born were missed even though my sister had been in hospital due to illness. There was an emergency situation with my sister after the baby was born, and the staff were rude and bombarding my sister with questions. Even my mother got shouted at to help to get my sister to respond - my mother was already doing all she could even though she is not a health care professional. Is this really how medical staff should behave in a emergency situation? The staff were not communicating and the atmosphere was hectic. When my sister came round she did not feel comfortable by the way she was being treated. Surely when giving birth to a baby you should be made to feel as comfortable as possible and be treated with respect? The baby was not washed after 24 hours (my sister could not do it has she was seriously ill in bed). My sister was offered no help with her baby. I remember when hospitals use to show you how to bath your baby and show you the basics - luckily enough my sister has a fantastic family support network and we showed her everything she needed to know. Even when my sister had to take her baby to hospital (because she became a little poorly) my sister had a nurse get very annoyed at her over nothing and stormed out of the room like a child. I would not recommend anyone I know to use this hospital - especially for giving birth.
