"Nurses do their best but totally overworked"

About: King George Hospital

My mum has been in King Georges for many weeks and during this time she has been treated well and respectfully however, there have been many occasions when the staffing levels have obviously been below what they should be meaning the nurses are working under extra pressure and less responsive to patient needs. As the ward my mum is on is for the elderly this means long waits for bedpans, no one available to help patients with their food and absolutely no time for relatives to gain information about the patient. I am not attacking the hospital staff because I think they are doing the best they can in what is obviously either an under funded or under staff ward. However, the elderly do deserve better care, surely wards with vulnerable people should have more staff not less.

Thank you for sharing your mother's experience with us. It’s wonderful to hear how well she was looked after, and I'm sorry at times you felt concerned about staffing levels. We are working hard within our Care of the Elderly wards to provide great care that every patient deserves, including refurbishing our facilities and recruiting additional Health Care Assistants to our Dementia team. Yours sincerely, Flo Panel-Coates Chief Nurse
