"Worried For Nowt!"

About: Sunderland Royal Hospital

My partner became poorly in the middle of the night recently and was sent by ambulance to the accident and emergency department at Sunderland Royal Hospital by the on call doctor. My partner is from Gateshead and regularly attends Queen Elizabeth hospital for a pre existing medical condition but was staying with me that night hence being directed to Sunderland Royal as it was closer. After hearing scare stories about Sunderland Royal he was not pleased about this, however he was in such discomfort at the time, he thought owt was better than nowt! On arrival, he was checked in quickly and to his relief was called to the assessment area shortly after. Over the course of the following couple of hours he was tended to by several members of the medical team for various procedures. Everyone involved in his care treated him with courtesy and respect. The 'problem' which had been causing his distress was diagnosed and treated quickly. Staff explained what they were doing and why and also explained the alternative steps they would need to take if the procedure didn't work. Luckily it did work and proved a huge relief from the discomfort he had been experiencing. He was kept in the assessment area for a while to ensure the original problem did not immediately recur, prescribed some medication and given some aftercare advice. The whole experience from arrival to discharge was quick, efficient and as pleasant as could be under the circumstances. My partner left A&E a very grateful man with a new found respect for Sunderland Royal Hospital and it's staff. His girlfriend was quite relieved too! Thankyou.

Thank you for sharing your partner's experience. We are delighted to hear that he had such a positive experience and whilst we understand he would not want to come back to see us, we do hope he won't be as anxious should the need arise again in the future. We will ensure your comments are shared with the whole team - they will be pleased they were able to reassure him as they make every effort to put patients at ease and to treat them as quickly and compassionately as possible. Thank you once again.
