"Difficult to get an emergency appointment at Manor Park surgery"

About: Leeds PCT

(as the patient),

After spending a weekend worrying about two areas of my health, i telephoned my surgery to get an appointment (Manor Park).

I was told there were only emergengency appointments left for the morning. No-one obviously has an emergency in the afternoon!

Each visit i make to the surgery i notice that over a hundred appointments have been missed every time. How do people who work Monday to Friday and have to take time off get to see a GP? We can't make advance appointments, only four weeks in advance on the instruction of the GP. In which case you could have expired.

I just find it ridiculous. If they are over-registered then it's not fair on the people that do keep their appointments because obviously those that don't are not really ill and are wasting NHS time.

At least i call the surgery and tell them if i need to cancel. I hope i'm still around to hear your reply.

The practice are very sorry to hear that you were unable to get an emergency appointment and have provided the following response:

We are a very busy surgery, however, we do guarantee to see all emergencies on the day of the request. Every day we have one GP who is dedicated to provide this service and they can see between 60 and 70 patients during the day.We don't put a limit on the number of patients that are seen.

However, due to the large number of requests we offer an appointment time in the order in which the requests are made. For example if a patient is ringing early in the morning we offer the earliest possible time which is usually in the morning. This means that we avoid 'lost time' and by doing this helps us to fit everyone in. If you are unable to attend in a morning the doctor on call can agree to an afternoon appointment being given.

We offer a wide variety of appointment types and some appointments can be booked one month in advance for routine matters. Unfortunately, there are still a number of patients who do not attend, but this is out of our control.

If you would like to discuss anything directly, please do contact the practice manager at Manor Park Surgery who would be happy to discuss this with you.
