"I hope things have improved since last year ..."

About: Hillingdon Hospital

I had my baby at Hillingdon in April last year. I was induced and had a horrible experience from start to finish. The antenatal ward was understaffed and 10 hours after being induced I was begging for an epidural. I was incorrectly told I was early on in the stages of labour and I would have to wait to be sent to the labour ward. No one bothered to check me and I was left to cope on my own. After another few hours I told the midwife I really needed to push and was again not checked and told incorrectly it was because my baby was back to back with me - I can only assume she was getting me confused with someone else - I was tired, scared and in a lot of pain so didn't argue. After another few hours I was making so much noise trying to cope with the contractions that they finally sent me to the labour ward for an epidural. The midwife lied to the one in the labour ward and told her she had checked me just before she brought me down. At this point I hadn't been checked for about 8 hours. I again said I was desperate to push and was ignored. They gave me an epidural - despite the fact I could barely sit down as my babies head was nearly out which we learnt afterward. After the epidural someone finally bothered to check me. 'Wow this baby will be here in less than 5 minutes', we really shouldn't have given you that epidural' was the response. The post labour ward was horrible. I was next to the midwives station and could hear them being rude about the patients. The bathrooms were filth and I left 6 hours after giving birth as I was so disgusted with the whole experience. I still have nightmares about my experience. Truly dreadful!

Please accept our apologies for the care you received during your time with us. I will be sharing your letter with the staff to reflect upon and learn from your feedback. I was sorry to hear about your experience of giving birth last year at Hillingdon Hospital. This falls short of our Trust CARES principles which lays out our culture and values framework and outlines the expected attitude and behaviour of all our staff. Sometimes reviewing the care received, by both going through the maternity notes and discussing experiences, can be helpful in resolving any outstanding concerns or worries. Sharing the reflection with staff allows us to learn from our mistakes and improve the experience for other women choosing to have their baby here. If you would be interested in going through your notes with a Supervisor of Midwives and further discuss your care then please contact Lesley Emmerson (Maternity PA) on 01895 279388 so that this can be arranged.
