Welcomed into a friendly atmosphere where there was a group of people with mixed abilities having the same diagnosis and wanting to help keep the diabetes controlled.
The two group leaders, one a diabetes nurse and the other a dietician were very clear to listen to, using a flip board to consolidate the information they gave, inviting group participation. We had some moments of humour throughout the afternoon on what is a serious disease when it spirals out of control. We were given a hot drink and offered a biscuit in a break of teaching which we all happily accepted.
I found the diet part hard to get to grips with (my attention span is not very good) whereas other people grasped it more confidently but I have come away with a good idea of what I am looking for in regards to food labelling and choices. I would advise anybody with a new diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes to the education classes if offered they are well worth the time and effort to learn truths about medication and reasons why it is prescribed. Any myths or misunderstandings of the conditions are dealt with so I have come away with a clearer picture and free pack of loads of information from Diabetes UK. I was also given a blood glucose meter to test myself which opened my eyes to the wrongs in my lifestyle and diet.
A job well done. Thank you
