On Monday morning my dad called out an ambulance as my mother was not well. The paramedic who came felt that my mother needed to be seen in hospital and called for an ambulance to take her into hospital.

The ambulance crew diagnosed and treated my mother for a water infection, their view was that my mum did not need to hospitalized, the medication would kick in in a few hours. (My mum’s blood pressure was 177/144).

Over the next few hours my father thought my mother’s condition was worsening and called 999 again and also called me. I went straight from work to see my Mother.

When I arrived at my parent’s home there was a paramedic already there. Coincidently it was the same paramedic who had come first thing in the morning. He was very annoyed that the ambulance crew had not taken my mother to hospital, called for another ambulance and waited until it arrived and the crew could confirm that hospital was the best option. My mother was then taken to the Great Western Hospital in Swindon where tests revealed she had had a stroke.

I would not want this to happen to anyone else.

The paramedic was absolutely brilliant on both occasions. The first ambulance crew was disgraceful.

We were sorry to hear of your mother's stroke and that you feel she did not receive good care. It may be helpful to contact the Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS). PALS is an independent organisation, there to ensure that the NHS listens to patients, their relatives, carers and friends, answers their questions and resolves their concerns as quickly as possible.
