"Unhappy with food on Newell ward"

About: Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust - City Campus

(as a relative),

I refused to let my wife have the meal she ordered, as the meat from lunch time was the same meat for tea. All she has had is pork turkey chicken and more pork. She ordered her meal, and was supposed to have been minced beef for her tea. But they had only pork again. This stinks! Pork twice in the same day and they had not even bothered to cook her meal.

The excuse was that it would take too long to cook, and being that pork was the only meat they had cooked that day, they had not wanted to cook her meal she ordered. The person who came up with the pork meal was not even going to get her anything to eat, because as I was leaving he turned the meal trolley off. All the time she was waiting for something to eat, he stood at the nurse's station talking to them. When I confronted him about her meal, he pretended to get on the phone to the kitchens and get something sorted out for her. All they did was send another person up to tell her that to cook a minced beef dinner would take too long. I have worked in kitchens and I know you can cook a mince beef dinner in under 20 minutes. I feel that the kitchens are just bone idle. If she has food poisoning from having reheated pork meat, then I will sue Nottingham University hospital trust for serving unfit food for human consumption.

Thank you for your feedback. I am extremely sorry to hear that you and your wife were unhappy with the food she was served when in our care, and with the way in which your concerns were responded to at the time. I would like to reassure you that none of the food which leaves our kitchen is returned to be reused, and we do not reheat any food from one mealtime to be served again at the next. Food safety and patient satisfaction is our highest priority. I would be happy to talk further about this with you if you wish, you are welcome to contact me by email at john.hughes@nuh.nhs.uk.
