"Poor communication between staff"

About: Russells Hall Hospital

I was admitted to C8 ward on the 5th of august, the care I received by certain staff nurses was very poor. I wasn't included in what was going on with my discharge, they informed me that I was able to go home but then decided I had to stay in yet another night. The communication between the nurses was extremely poor, I had to repeat myself over 5 times regarding my medication to different members of staff due to poor communication. I have been waiting 2 days for my medication to take home which still isn't sorted for me to pick up. I could barely understand the foreign nurses as their English was not up to a very good standard, I had to ask them to repeat theirselves and ask for someone else to tell me what they were saying. I would no recommend this hospital to anybody.

Thank you for letting us know about your experience of our hospital during your stay on ward C8. We are sorry to hear that you were unhappy with the care you received. Maintaining good communication and making sure we involve patients in decisions about their care is incredibly important to us, so it is very disappointing to hear that you did not feel fully informed about your discharge. All members of nursing staff employed by the Trust go through an in-depth interview process which, as well as checking a number of skills and competencies required of our nurses, also assesses their level of spoken English. Your feedback has been shared with the lead nurse responsible for ward C8. She has passed your comments onto her team and reinforced the need for good communication with patients. If you are still waiting for your medication or would like to discuss your care, we would urge you to contact the lead nurse for ward C8 on (01384) 456111 extension 2445. Alternatively, you can contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on free phone 0800 073 0510 who would be happy to look into the issues you have raised.
