My mother has just had a short stay in Abbotsbury Ward and whilst there were some aspects of her care which were good, in general the nurses treated her with respect and dignity. However I was there twice when she rang her alarm for assistance to go to the toilet and after 10 minutes I had to go and find somebody. How long would it have taken if I hadn't have been there? When I did find a nurse she was very good and stopped what she was doing immediately and attended to my mother. Mum is paralysed in one arm and partially sighted and requires assistance with her meals which she did not receive (I did not find out about this until after her discharge) I was very impressed that when I asked to speak to the nurse caring for Mum she was well informed and took time to explain her treatment and progress, however the nurses at the reception desk try very hard to ignore anybody standing there trying to get their attention. I understand that they are busy but it would take seconds to acknowledge somebody and give an indication of when they would be able to attend to the enquiry. Customer service seems to have bypassed the reception desk. Discharge procedure was good with all drugs ready and a good handover when I collected mum, however, I had been advising the staff for 3 days that she would need additional support on discharge and they failed to complete a section 2 which meant that for her to come home before the weekend I had to arrange private care for her. Once there is an elderly patient near to discharge why are plans not put in place before day of discharge?
