"5 star care from North Devon Barnstaple Hospital"

About: North Devon District Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as the patient),

My wife and I were on holiday in Woolacombe in July this year (2014) and whilst walking to the beach through a woodland path, my wife slipped and fractured/displaced her leg just above the ankle joint. I could not believe how friendly, caring, helpful and professional all the NHS staff were in this area.

The NHS which we try not to use in our area - Hertfordshire, is very poor, and I always had a biased view of the NHS for many years, but this has opened my eyes, that not all NHS services are the same in every area.

I cannot praise the paramedics and hospital staff enough. Whilst my wife was in hospital, I could not help but notice, how well the elderly patients were looked after. I found all staff from the cleaners, admin, shop, nurses, doctors and even the consultants were extremely helpful and kind. The hospital itself was so clean I felt that you could eat off the floor, not that I would anyway, but this just summed up how well all aspects of the hospital were managed.

I would rate this hospital as 10/10 or 5 Star.

Dear Charlie H

Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experience in our Emergency Department with us, I was sorry to see that you had to visit the A&E during your holiday period, but was very pleased to learn you were treated so well, and that you found the care given to elderly patients so good. The trust has undertaken a great deal of work in training staff who treat elderly patients, and clearly it has paid off.

It's always very useful to learn from observations made by patients who are from out of area, as they can compare NHS services, and clearly we have performed well in all aspects of care and treatment, which is very encouraging for staff.

I have passed your very kind comments on to the Emergency Department Manager, where they will be very warmly recieved and shared with the staff involved.

I do hope your wife is now fully recovered and that you will visit North Devon again.

Jayne
